RAISE THE BAR

Updated: Aug 28, 2019

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez always seems to serve her constituents in style

Before becoming a congresswoman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was a bartender in New York and some would like to see the freshman politician returning to her earlier career.

People look down on her previous job and Republicans try to put her down, I imagine because she is a threat to everything that they stand for.

Congresswoman Cortez has defended her experience as a bartender in epic fashion but who is crazy enough to still criticise Cortez?

Through Twitter attacks, Cortez deflects insults into strengths and this weekend she will shake things up once again as she serves her constituents not just as a politician but as a bartender too.

The aim is simple, she wants to raise the plight of people on minimum wage and when we look at America’s attitude towards tipping, we can see a very unhealthy respect for paying people a decent wage. People depend on tips which I have never seen for example in Spain or Ireland. Tips are always appreciated but tipping I have read comes from a racist past where African Americans were able to work but rather than being paid, they worked for tips. Tipping is expected in some places but people can’t depend on generosity.

For all his many vices, Donald J Trump is not known to drink alcohol but through many recent political scandals in America as well as Brexit in the UK, many people are being driven to drink.

Trump's most recent Attorney General, William Barr is probably in need of a few stiff drinks too.

More politicians could focus on their past experiences to make life better for people in similar fields but sadly many politicians seem to enter a political bubble when they are elected.

Let’s raise a glass to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as she raises the roof in the House of Representatives and hopefully smashes through the glass ceiling with a cocktail in her hand. Who could be better to serve America than Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or a barman before her known as Honest Abe.
