I remember the morning that Brian Cowen became the leader of Fianna Fail.
I was so proud to see a Midland man taking the top job and I think I congratulated him as Senators, TDs, and Ministers filled into the Dáil canteen and surrounded the table he sat at.
A few days later he became Taoiseach and the pride I had felt quickly turned to despair as the "Soft Landing" his predecessor had promised, hit every family in Ireland like a tonne of bricks.
The world watched the Finacial Crisis hit Ireland hard and Brian Cowen was seen like a drunk at the wheel as commentators started to question how much Brian Cowen was drinking.
Brian's brother has become a minister and we are now learning that he had a suspended licence for three months as a result of drink driving and Barry Cowen TD continued to claim his normal travel allowance during that time which was worth a pretty penny to the average household recovering from economic ruin and billion-dollar bank bailouts.
The Cowen family does not deserve the blame for the banking crisis but if Barry Cowen wants to take the driver's seat of a Ministerial Car, I think we should demand that all TD's have a full driver's licence if they intend to drive on their own or else a babysitter with them at all times.
The absolute cheek of some people. I thought Maria Bailey was bad with Swing Gate. I hope the Minister for Agriculture at least has a tractor licence driving into the Department of Agriculture today.
OBAMAGATE: At least Barrack Obama looked for a driving licence when he left office in 2016.
