Joder

Updated: Sep 11, 2019

I just heard that John Bercow is to step down and my immediate reaction is not a polite one.

Joder, which I presume is what John Bercow has been secretly saying all this time while helming discussions in parliament as Speaker of the House of Commons.

John Bercow is a teachers' pet in the sense that teachers must love listening to him shouting, "Order" all the time but with people actually listening. A comical star for his attempts to bring order on an unruly ruling class.

His outfit and choice of ties also makes him look like a teacher and I have even seen John Bercow t-shirts for sale on Amazon. Amazon the online marketplace obviously not that place that used to have rainforests before Jair Bolsonaro was elected President of Brazil.

Maybe Amazon.com might consider changing their name to Ashes.com the way arsons have accidentally burned down rainforests to make way for farming but one disaster at a time.

I may not like the way rightwing governments in America, England and Brazil have taken a torch to democracy in the last few years but few can hold a candle to the Right Honourable John Bercow MP who has tried to keep "Order" in the House of Commons since 2009.

Bercow is a former conservative politician who has captured the public's imagination with just one word, Joder. Joder, I mean "Order" which is a natural word to be repeated by a judge banging a gavel but few have need to repeat it so often in televised proceedings.

Like the legendary Bercow, the t-shirts on Amazon priced at $22.99 from Theodore Tee just said, "Order" which I presume is a reference to Shepard Fairy's "Obey" line of t-shirts. Fairy is a famous designer who created the Obama "Hope" poster and became an international name even appearing as himself in an episode of the Simpsons.

I have recreated John Bercow here in the Obama poster style.

Let's HOPE the presiding officer will get more of the Shepard Fairy treatment when he runs for President of the Remaining States of England and Wales but then again Wales voted to leave and Scotland and Northern Ireland wouldn't need to look for independence if England decided to remain in Europe.

There is even a John Bercow ringtone which features the beloved character saying, "Order" which again I keep hearing as Joder. Joder in Spanish means fuck or as John Bercow would say, "Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuuuck, fuuuck, fuck."

John Bercow and his lively exchanges with politicians will be missed.

Following the resignation of Michael Martin, John Bercow was elected Speaker on June 22, 2009 and was re-elected, unopposed three times. The Speaker presides over the House's debates and determines which members may speak. He is also responsible for maintaining "Order" during debate and can punish those who break the rules. Speakers are non-partisan and must renounce their affiliation from their former political party.

While there has been a presiding officer since 1258, there has never been one more beloved worldwide for trying to keep "Order" in the House of Commons. The Right Honourable John Bercow MP has served for ten years as Speaker and served under four Prime Ministers, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Theresa May and the new guy.

I wonder if he will see a fifth Prime Minister before he steps down on or before the 31st of October.

Joder, might be time to change my Halloween costume
