Night at the Museum

Updated: May 22, 2019

Hope you all enjoyed International Museum Day (& Night) on May 18th

Last year 40,000 museums took part in International Museum Day. I take a look inside just one.

No I am not working the graveyard shift as a security guard but living so close to so many wonderful museums, I couldn't miss stepping inside Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza for a little late night art appreciation.

The Thyssen as it is simply known is based on a private collection and is housed in one of Madrid's many many palaces across from the world famous Prado Museum. The two museums are part of the Golden Triangle of Art which also includes the Reina Sofia Museum.

There are many more museums in Madrid and near the Prado you will also find a fantastic naval museum but el triangulo de los museos as it is known locally, houses millions and millions of euros of art including El Guernica in Reina Sofia which is worth €750,000,000. This near billion Euro painting is incredible but unlike Reina Sofia museum and El Prado, their neighbour Thyssen allows you to take pictures next to their Van Goghs and Picassos and I of course prefer to take pictures than paint them.

WOMAN IN A BATH AT MIDNIGHT: People enjoying Roy Lichtenstein's 1963 Woman in a Bath.

If you want to see a T-Rex like in the Night at the Museum films then make-no-bones-about-it and travel a few kilometres down the road to El Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales which has a large collection of dinosaur bones and other fossils.

El Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales was also celebrating International Museum Day and I'm sure Ben Stiller would have enjoyed visiting Madrid's museums at night but if you are more interested in American museums than you could always visit the Museo de América.

For Anna's birthday we visited The Natural Science Museum and last May we spent six hours in the Prado for the festival of San Isidro. Here is a nice picture of Anna with a T-Rex. I have yet to see Museo de América but the great thing about International Museum Day is that you can see these museums for free.

This was not my first time to celebrate Museum Day as I have also enjoyed Lange Nacht der Museen in Berlin about 15 years ago and I do love the Museumsinsel (Museum Island) on the River Spree and hope to see many more Madrid museums at night, in the future.

What museum adventures wait inside these incredible buildings for you to discover tomorrow?

TRIO: The proximity of these museums is demonstrated inside the newly named Estación del Arte.

NEXT STOP KENTUCKY: I wonder if this poster is a Finger LichtensteinGood.
