"I am sorry you can’t smoke here," a young ponytailed waiter tells a blonde woman who is smoking outside the restaurant.
The news doesn’t go over well on the trio of Bulgarian speakers but the waiter explains that it is the law and she distinguishes her cigarette in the ice bucket on their table.
I don’t follow the conversation in either Spanish or Bulgarian but my girlfriend gives me the highlights. I question the law and the waiter’s legal knowledge as I thought the anti-smoking law only applied to Galicia and the Canary Islands.
A quick google search reveals that the new law was announced earlier that day and I feel bad for the waiter trying to enforce a law that no one has heard of, especially when the customer is always right.
Yesterday I learnt that the former king was leaving his wife and Spain and I wonder what other developments I might be missing while completely disconnected from the news, on holidays.
Spain has many outbreaks right now though almost everyone I see in Torrevieja is wearing masks in the street and now you can’t even smoke in the street. Luckily I am not a smoker but I wonder how long it will be before we are locked down again like we were in March, April, and May.
Who knows where this will end, all we can do is wait.
